The Rangers, seeking additional options for their rotation, are close to signing free-agent right-hander Kris Benson to a minor-league contract, according to major-league sources.

Benson, 34, underwent rotator-cuff surgery in March 2007 and last pitched in the majors with the Orioles in 2006.
The Rangers' rotation is expected to include right-handers Kevin Millwood, Vicente Padilla, Brandon McCarthy, Scott Feldman and lefty Matt Harrison. The team also has signed righty Jason Jennings to a minor-league contract.
Benson, the first overall pick in the 1996 draft, has pitched for the Pirates, Mets and Orioles. He is 68-73 lifetime with a 4.34 ERA.
