MEDICAL WATCH:
LHP Billy Wagner (strained left forearm) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to Aug. 4. He starting playing catch Aug. 8. He made a minor league rehab appearance Aug. 14 and will make another Aug. 16, but he will not be ready to return when first eligible Aug. 18. C Ramon Castro (sore right ankle) was injured in the Aug. 2 game, and he didn't play Aug. 3-6. He returned to action Aug. 7, but left in the fifth inning with ankle pain. He didn't play again until he started Aug. 12. He sat out Aug. 13-15, but started Aug.16.
RHP John Maine (right shoulder strain) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to July 29. He was activated Aug. 13.
OF Ryan Church (migraine headaches) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to July 7. He had a DL stint earlier this season that was prompted by a concussion. He took batting practice July 29-30. He might start a rehab assignment in mid-August.
RHP Tony Armas (abdominal strain) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to July 8.
2B Luis Castillo (strained left hip flexor) went on the 15-day disabled list July 3. He began a minor league rehab assignment in early August, but he left Class A St. Lucie on Aug. 10 to attend to a personal matter.
OF Trot Nixon (strained left groin) went on the 15-day disabled list June 29.
RHP Matt Wise (right shoulder weakness) went on the 15-day disabled list May 27. The Mets had no timetable for his return.
LHP Jason Vargas (hip) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 21, and he had surgery March 24. As of mid-June, he was rehabbing at the club's spring training complex in Port St. Lucie, Fla. The Mets had no timetable for his return.
RHP Orlando Hernandez (right foot surgery in October 2007) opened the season on the 15-day disabled list. He began a rehab assignment with Class A St. Lucie on April 3, but he was shut down indefinitely on April 8. He began another rehab assignment July 11, but he left a July 17 rehab start with Class AA Binghamton after one inning. He stepped on the bag awkwardly covering first on the first batter of the game and aggravated his right foot injury. He was working out with the Class A Brooklyn team in late July.
RHP Ambiorix Burgos (Tommy John surgery in August 2007) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 21, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on July 3. He began a minor league rehab assignment Aug. 5.
LF Moises Alou (torn left hamstring) went on the 15-day disabled list May 22 with a strained left calf. He was activated June 10 but left that day's game with stiffness in the calf. He went back on the DL retroactive to June 11. He began a minor league rehab assignment July 1, but he suffered the hamstring injury July 9. He had season-ending surgery July 22.
LF Angel Pagan (tightness in left shoulder) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 12, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on Aug. 5. He wasn't cleared to play in games until July 11, but he aggravated the injury July 16. He was diagnosed with a torn labrum, and he had season-ending surgery July 29.
