The Mets completed their first-ever home stand at Citi Field with a 3-3 record, after losing a series to the Padres, then taking two of three from the Brewers. Struggling with runners in scoring position was a particular issue for the Mets, but the most dialogue has been how big the new ballpark plays with its spacious outfield dimensions.
PLAYER NEWS: --LHP Casey Fossum's addition for long-relief work gives the Mets a second southpaw in the bullpen for the first time this season. Fossum, who allowed one earned run in 11 innings at Class AAA Buffalo, joins fellow lefty reliever Pedro Feliciano.
--CF Carlos Beltran and 3B David Wright received their 2008 Gold Glove awards Sunday at Citi Field. Beltran won his third straight. Wright won for the second straight year.
--OF Gary Sheffield drew praise from manager Jerry Manuel for his right-field play Sunday, notable considering Sheffield didn't pick up a glove at all with the Tigers during spring training. Sheffield capably fielded flyballs, while experienced RF Corey Hart of the Brewers lost a flyball in the tough sun.
MEDICAL WATCH:
RHP Mike Pelfrey (right forearm tendinitis) missed his scheduled April 19 start. He still is expected to be OKfor his April 25 start.
C Brian Schneider (strained back) missed the April 16 game and was placed on the 15-day disabled list on April 17.
RHP Tim Redding (weak right shoulder) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He might face hitters in extended spring training in mid-April.
OF Angel Pagan (arthroscopic right elbow surgery in March 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He will be out until at least late April.
LHP Billy Wagner (Tommy John surgery in September 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He will attempt to throw at the Mets' spring training complex in April, and he hopes to return for the final month of the season.
