--LHP Billy Wagner, on the disabled list with a strained left elbow, will be re-examined Tuesday. The Mets are going with a closer-by-committee in his absence.

--LHP Oliver Perez (9-7, 3.91 ERA) will make his 26th start of the season Tuesday. Perez is ranked sixth in the National League with a .229 batting average against. In 11 career starts against Atlanta, Perez is 6-4 with a 3.39 ERA, including 4-1 last season.

--RHP Luis Ayala, acquired from Washington on Sunday, could get a save opportunity with LHP Billy Wagner on the disabled list. "Whatever they want," said Ayala. "I'm just happy to be here in this organization and have a chance to win."

--RHP John Maine is still struggling. On Monday he pitched five scoreless innings, but he threw 96 pitches and walked four against Pittsburgh. Maine has been bothered with stiffness in his right rotator cuff.

BY THE NUMBERS: 18 -- Times Johan Santana had worked into the seventh inning or later in 26 starts through August 17.
