--LHP Johan Santana's shutout against the Marlins on short rest the second-to-last game of the season turned out to be even more incredible than originally thought. Santana quietly pitched the final month of the season with left knee discomfort and had surgery to repair a torn meniscus after the season. He's expected to fully recover well before spring training.
--RHP John Maine underwent surgery to shave a bony growth on his right shoulder blade after the season. Maine is expected to begin tossing a baseball in late December, his normal routine. His last start came Aug. 23 against Houston despite a late-season comeback bid. --INF/OF Daniel Murphy, primarily a third baseman in the minors and used in left field after getting promoted to the big leagues in August, is learning second base in the Arizona Fall League. He's likely to resume playing outfield when he continues his heavy offseason workload playing winter ball in Puerto Rico.
--RHP Ambiorix Burgos is in legal trouble in two countries. Burgos was jailed in the Dominican Republic after allegedly killing two women in a hit-and-run accident. He still has a court date pending in New York for allegedly roughing up his girlfriend in a Queens hotel room near Shea Stadium. Burgos missed the 2008 season while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery.
BY THE NUMBERS: 4 -- Ex-Mets on the American League champion Tampa Bay Rays roster: Chad Bradford, Cliff Floyd, Scott Kazmir and Dan Wheeler.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "We felt he's the right person to lead our baseball operations effort today and through the extension period here. Listen, we failed this year, and we want to get the redemption that we need and move forward. We thought Omar and his staff is the best group to put us in that position. We obviously were not a very good team when Omar came aboard. He's turned this thing around, and we think he deserves another chance to keep getting us to where we want to be." -- Chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon on signing GM Omar Minaya to a three-year extension, through 2012, with two team options despite the Mets' second consecutive September swoon.
