--1B Carlos Delgado recorded his 2,000th major league hit in the first inning of Sunday's game. The double off Atlanta RHP James Parr scored David Wright with the game's opening run. Delgado had three more hits in the Mets' 7-6 loss.
--RHP Pedro Martinez, dejected by a frustrating season on and off the field, volunteered to pitch in relief in the postseason assuming the Mets qualify. Martinez allowed four runs in six innings Saturday in Atlanta to drop to 5-6 with a 5.50 ERA. "I've had a really rough year," said Martinez, whose father died in July after battling brain cancer. "It's not only physically. It's not only numbers-wise. It's also mentally. I've been through a lot." --2B Damion Easley, who had missed a week with a strained right quadriceps, pinch-hit Sunday. He struck out, and he would have required a pinch runner had he reached base. "It's still sore with walking, but I'm able to do some other things," Easley said.
--RHP John Maine is scheduled to pitch a simulated inning Monday afternoon at Shea Stadium. He could be activated from the disabled list to pitch in relief after that workout. Maine, who faced batters Saturday for the first time in a month, when he threw 24 pitches to teammates while hitting 86-87 mph, needs offseason surgery to shave a bone spur behind his right shoulder.
--RHP Bobby Parnell is headed for more responsibility working in the bullpen. The rookie, who retired Atlanta's Jeff Francoeur and Brandon Jones in his second big-league appearance Saturday with the Mets trailing by two runs, is ready to enter a game in the late innings with the Mets holding a tight lead, interim manager Jerry Manuel said.
BY THE NUMBERS: 50 -- First-inning hits by SS Jose Reyes this season through Sept. 19, setting a franchise record. Reyes, who had 49 first-inning hits in 2006, had shared the record with Felix Millan, who had 49 in 1975.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "That speech I gave, I won't be selling any CDs." -- Interim manager Jerry Manuel, after a 15-minute pre-game meeting on Sept. 16 in Washington failed to inspire the Mets, who lost that night's game, 1-0, to the Nationals.
