Only 10 players in MLB history have more steals in their first six seasons: Vince Coleman (549), Rickey Henderson (493), Kenny Lofton (327), Tim Raines (321), Bob Bescher (320), Omar Moreno (313), Ron LeFlore (294), Bert Campaneris (292), Maury Wills (289) and Davey Lopes (286).
--2B Luis Castillo, benched for three games, started at the position over Damion Easley on Wednesday. Castillo didn't regain his customary No. 2 slot in the order. LF Daniel Murphy instead batted second, with Castillo placed seventh for the first time this season. --RHP Pedro Martinez threw on flat ground at Shea Stadium while working with trainer Chris Correnti. Martinez remains on track for Saturday's start against the Phillies despite suffering from shoulder stiffness in last weekend's outing against the Marlins.
--RF Ryan Church's grand slam gave the Mets homers in 14 consecutive games, the second-longest streak in franchise history. The club record is 21 in 1996.
--LHP Jon Niese is expected to remain in the Mets rotation despite lasting just three-plus innings in his major league debut Tuesday in Milwaukee. Still, interim manager Jerry Manuel hasn't fully committed to using Niese, since the Mets don't require a fifth starter again until Sept. 16 because of three upcoming off days.
BY THE NUMBERS: 13-3 -- The Mets' record in Mike Pelfrey's last 16 starts. All three of the losses have come to the Marlins, including a 4-3 defeat Saturday in which Pelfrey allowed two runs in 6 2/3 innings and received a no-decision.
