 Carlos Delgado has been the Mets' clear-cut most valuable player. Now he seems to be forcing himself into the debate about whether he merits the National League MVP honor. Since a week after the Mets switched managers from Willie Randolph to Jerry Manuel, Delgado has been on a hitting tear. He has 69 RBIs in his last 67 games, dating to June 27. Eighteen of those RBIs have given the Mets the lead, tied with teammate Carlos Beltran for the major league lead during that span. Delgado's two-homer game Sunday against the Phillies nearly singlehandedly salvaged the series finale and prevented Philadelphia from pulling even for first place in the NL East standings. It seemed a no-brainer entering July, when Delgado had a .228 average, that the Mets would decline Delgado's 2009 team option. Now it's clearly the case that the Mets will exercise their $12 million option. (They're otherwise obligated for a $4 million buyout.) "When you look back at his hits, they have definitely been of a clutch variety," Manuel said. "They haven't been home runs that don't mean anything. They seem to be at a critical time."
