The Mets' postseason push was dealt a serious blow Sunday as Billy Wagner's return this season was placed in doubt. The closer was forced to cut short a simulated game at Shea Stadium between games of the Mets-Phillies doubleheader with renewed discomfort in his left elbow.
Wagner is due to be examined Monday at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan. He has been on the disabled list for more than a month. Initially, Wagner landed on the DL with a strained left forearm. After pitching in a rehab game with Class AA Binghamton on Aug. 14, Wagner began to experience stiffness in the elbow. He attempted to throw a simulated game in Pittsburgh on Aug. 16 with the hope of being activated two days later, but the elbow became painful and inflamed. A subsequent MRI was inconclusive because the swelling in the area clouded the picture.
Wagner is in the third season of a four-year, $43 million deal that includes a team option for 2010. He is 0-1 with a 2.30 ERA and 27 saves in 34 chances.
Without Wagner, former Nationals reliever Luis Ayala has emerged as the closer.
PHILLIES 6, METS 2 (first game): Pedro Martinez allowed six runs in four innings in an afternoon makeup of Saturday's Tropical Storm Hanna postponement. Jamie Moyer limited the Mets to two hits in seven scoreless innings. The Mets went the first 16 innings of the series scoreless until David Wright's RBI double in the eighth inning off reliever Scott Eyre.
METS 6, PHILLIES 3 (second game): Carlos Delgado slugged two homers off Cole Hamels in the nightcap of the doubleheader, and the Mets avoided a three-game sweep. The Mets maintained a two-game lead over the Phillies in the NL East, identical to the division separation entering Sunday's doubleheader. Johan Santana limited the Phillies to two runs and five hits while tossing 116 pitches in 7 1/3 innings.
